Until the early 20th century, ships served primarily for transportation rather than leisure. With no alternative to crossing the Atlantic, these journeys often became one-way trips, especially amid rising immigration. Over time, however, cruising evolved into a luxury experience, marked by gourmet dining, lively social scenes, and scenic escapes—a shift that made cruises popular for families.
The world’s first grand ship resembling a modern cruise liner date back to the 3rd century BC, designed by Greek mathematician Archimedes. Commissioned by Hiero II of Syracuse, the Syrakosia was so vast it could not be contained by Sicilian ports. Equipped with a garden and an indoor bathhouse, it set the stage for leisure at sea.
In the early 1900s, luxury cruising became a symbol of wealth. Cunard and White Star led the way with lavish amenities like pools, à la carte dining, and elevators. While first-class passengers enjoyed opulent settings, steerage passengers faced much simpler accommodation.
From 1900 to 1950, Hamburg America Line introduced the first purpose-built pleasure cruise ship, sparking interest from lines like P&O, Cunard, and White Star. The tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912 underscored both the risks and allure of transatlantic travel.
